Alpacas are one of the most gentle, calm animals you can find. When you walk into the barn, they all make you feel welcome by stopping in their tracks and looking at you. We always have to have our alpaca fix every day. We really enjoy working with them, most of the time. Poop duty is never a real pleasure other than the fantastic fertilizer it makes. Did you know that alpaca poop is naturally PH balanced and some of the best fertilizer there is? You can put it on plants and it won't burn. The greenest part of the pasture is around the poop piles. Yes, for the most part, they poop in certain piles. Once in a while you have an alpaca that didn't read the book and they poop where ever they please. We usually try to sell these animals asap. We have fun watching them run up and down a steep hill in our pastures. We have been spit on more times than we care to think about in our 7 years of being in the alpaca business. They only spit if they feel threatened, such as when you give meds or are treating them for some ailment. We welcome questions and visits on our farm located in Vermilion, OH. Hi everyone, welcome to our blog. When it comes to alpaca care, we all need any information we can get. We've been in the alpaca business for about seven years now. In the alpaca clothing business for about a year and a half. We would like to exchange any information and discuss any topic you want.
Our news flash for the moment is: after all these years raising alpacas we finally realized if when it's feeding time (especially during the winter) you put out hay the minute you walk into the barn, you just may not get trampled when you bring out the grain. We have been doing this for a while now and what a difference. Try it, put out the hay, go about your other chores (water, cleaning up the never ending poop pile, etc.) It's a big difference, as I said, you just may not get trampled.
